TRON energy for exchange withdrawals

An exchange that pays out USDT on TRON sends one transfer per withdrawal from a hot wallet. Each one needs energy on that wallet, or it burns TRX instead.

Example queue. Press the button to send withdrawals. When the energy runs out the network burns TRX from the wallet, and the same queue costs far more. A rental lasts 15 minutes.

Where the energy goes

  1. 1

    A withdrawal is approved

The customer asks to withdraw USDT to a TRC-20 address, and the exchange queues a transfer from a hot wallet.

  2. 2

Energy is on the hot wallet

The hot wallet pays for the transfer, so the energy has to be delegated to it before it sends. Without it the network burns TRX from that wallet.

  3. 3

    The transfer is sent

The customer's address receives USDT. What it costs depends on whether that address already holds USDT: 65,000 Energy if it does, 131,000 if its balance is zero.

Where energy is spent

Hot wallet transfers

Every outgoing USDT withdrawal is a contract call that spends energy from the sending wallet.

Bursts of withdrawals

Withdrawals tend to arrive together. One order sized for the burst covers them within the 15-minute window.

Refilling the hot wallet

Moving USDT between the exchange's own wallets also costs energy, and it is the same kind of transfer.

What this does not cover

This models USDT transfers only. An exchange that stakes TRX itself can delegate its own energy to its hot wallets and does not need to rent. Renting suits one that does not want that capital locked.

Questions

Does a withdrawal cost more when the customer's address is new?

It depends on the USDT balance, not on how old the address is. An address with zero USDT costs about twice the energy of one that holds some. An address never used on TRON also needs a one-off activation.

How many withdrawals can one order cover?

As many as fit into the energy you order and are sent while the rental lasts, which is 15 minutes. A larger order covers a burst; transfers after it ends need a new one.
